Ridgewood Kit Home

The Renovation of 162 Hope Street

A bunch of pictures

Here are a bunch of pictures that show markings, the gas fixture pipes
for the original gas lighting. We are nearing the end of demolition
so these are probably the last photos before stuff gets covered back
up. I'll also take pictures of some of the more interesting items we
found inside the walls and ceilings.

Here's a photo of the junction box for the lighting fixture in the middle of the dining room. You can see an old gas pipe going into the box. In the same ceiling there's also old knob and tube wiring.

Renovation Pics

Here are some more pics showing some of the renovation that started.

The house also slopes about 3" from the front wall to the back wall
with a deeper sag right in the center of the house. We had much of
the sagging corrected although the slope from front to back remains,
it is much less noticeable now. We weren't all that concerned about
the windows/doors becoming misaligned as we will be replacing most of
the windows and most of the original doors are missing. Some of the
remaining plaster cracked open but it can be repaired.

We are very happy with the overall results!

Windows

Here's a couple of pictures of the original picture window in the front of the house. We are looking to upgrade all of the other windows in the house and possible replicate this pattern on the other windows in the front of the house.

Identification Marks

Here are some pictures of the handwritten identification marks
uncovered during some of the renovations.

pic1 was found on the door frame between the dining room and kitchen.
pic2 was found on the back of a piece of trim around one of the doors.
pics 3 - 5 are from the dining room ceiling. A bunch of beams labeled
with the same numbers.
pics 6 - 8 are from different areas of the kitchen.
pics 9 - 12 are all from different areas in the attic.

Identification Marks

We also spent some time tearing down much some of the damaged plaster
and lathe walls. During this process we uncovered several more
handwritten numeric markings. In the next post I'll post pictures of
the marks that were found in the attic along with the other marks and
the location that they were found.

sometime in the late 40's.

Identification Marks

Here's a website about kit homes in Morris County, NJ. They have a page about marks on joists which can help identify the source of the kit home. See http://www.co.morris.nj.us/MCHC/exhibits/houses/. In the attic of 162 Hope St are numbers handwritten on the lumber.
